Planning The Perfect Road Trip On a Budget

Road tripping is probably one of my favorite ways to take a break and throughout the years I have clocked up a huge number of miles, touring around this great country of ours. Just after college, it was fair to say that money wasn’t something that I had very much of and through those years ether were many aspects of my life which I was forced to do on a budget, including my road trips.

My ex-college roomie and I didn’t want to let a silly thing like a lack of cash, get in the way of our road trip plans and so we decided to go about things a little differently so that we could have our road trip, without spending bags of cash.

Gas will probably be your biggest expense during your road trip so it is important that you plan well for this. In the past we would jump in the car and just drive, with no clue as to where we were going, or how far away. When money is tight however, you can’t afford yourself this type of freedom and instead you need to have an exact destination and route in mind. I like to pick somewhere which is not too far away, and most importantly, which has a direct route to get to it so as to avoid long distances, and heavy gas costs.

If you are planning on going away for a few days or more then hotels and hostels are going to set you back quite a few dollars. In order to counteract this, the best way is to pitch up your tent and sleep under the stars. Even if you need to invest in a tent, you will still save money in the long run through sleeping in this way. There are many campsites throughout the country with very low costs, and there are also many locations where you can just pull up, pitch up, and spend the night for free.

Buying food and drink when you are on the road, or even at your destination, can be expensive and it is important to make different plans. My idea was to buy two large ice boxes and go to the grocery store before the trip. Instead dog buying food out then, we would be armed to the teeth with sandwiches and snacks, right there in the trunk of the car. The key to saving money on stuff like this is in the preparation and if you can get that right, you will be able to save plenty of money.

It is important that you do all that you can do avoid the costs which come from break downs and accidents and this is work which you need to do before you leave. For just a few dollars you can get your car checked over by a garage to look out for any pre-existing issues which your car may have. This may be a cost that you don’t want to pay but if something is found, it would have cost you a great deal more had you not checked.
